AAG Research Trust grants opening soon

The AAG Research Trust manages four grant programs that provide seed funding for research, projects and programs across the field of ageing. With the 2024 RM Gibson grant program already open, three more grant programs will open on Monday 13 May 2024:

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Grant:

  • Aimed at supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander researchers or practitioners working across the multidisciplinary field of ageing to build their skills and capacity; and developing evidence-based knowledge about ageing in Indigenous Australian communities that takes an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspective and standpoint to inform policy and program development.

  • One grant up to $25,000 in 2024

The Hal Kendig Research Development Program (HKRDP):

  • Aimed at early career researchers (not practitioners) working on discrete research projects that further the interests of vulnerable older people in advanced age, with a strong emphasis on the psycho-social aspects of ageing and quality of life.

  • Up to two grants of up to $25,000 each in 2024

The Strategic Innovation Program (SIP):

  • Aimed at early to mid-career researchers or practitioners, whose work aims to improve the experience of ageing through innovation in policy and practice.

  • Up to two grants of up to $25,000 each in 2024, plus a possible additional grant through our valued partnership with the Dementia Australia Research Foundation, for an application that has a substantive dementia focus.

The Research Trust pages on the AAG website provide information on each grant, including aims, eligibility, assessment criteria and application guidelines. Applications will close on Monday 24 June 2024. Applications must be made through the Research Trust webpage.

AAG co-hosted events coming up

Our range of different events reflects our diverse, multidisciplinary membership. While we highlight two online events coming up in May, we remind you to keep an eye on our main events page:

AAG and GANA present:
International nurses leading Australian Aged Care

Thursday 9 May, 2.00 to 3.30 pm AEST, via Zoom
To celebrate International Nurse's Day, this event highlights the vital contribution of our overseas born or trained nurses in delivering high quality care in Australia. Join this webinar to listen and share the journey of a number of our professional colleagues with international backgrounds as they describe their experiences that led them into a career aged care in Australia, and the care and system achievements they are proud of. Register here.

AAG and The Australian Frailty Network present:
Frailty and the power of connectedness: Responding to frailty through social engagement and community connection

Wednesday 15 May 12.00 to 1.00 pm AEST, via Zoom
Frailty presents a significant challenge to ageing well, and is associated with increased vulnerability, loss of independence, and a higher risk of poor health outcomes. Addressing frailty requires a holistic approach, looking beyond medical intervention. Social engagement and community connection are crucial elements to slowing the progression of frailty, mitigating its impacts, and empowering individuals to prevent and manage frailty. This webinar will explore the pivotal role of social interactions in preventing and improving frailty, community mobility and participation, and how technology can help older adults and people living with frailty to stay connected in the community. Register here.

Multicultural ageing event

The Policy Dialogue on Migration and Ageing in a Multicultural Australia will take place in Canberra on Monday 20 May 2024.

This forum brings together academia, government, industry and the community to explore challenges and opportunities for this policy area. The event is jointly hosted by the ARC Centre of Excellence in Population Ageing Research (CEPAR) and the Centre for Applied Macroeconomic Analysis (CAMA) in the ANU Crawford School of Public Policy.

AAG is pleased to see how many of our members are involved in this important event, including Emeritus Professor Julie Byles, who is a Life Member and past-President of AAG. CEPAR is one of AAG's collaborating research centres (CRCs).
