AAG500 Blog: Dr Victoria Cornell talks flexible and diverse housing for older people

In the latest AAG500 blog post, Dr Victoria Cornell challenges the idea that flexible housing for older people is a “niche” concern. She unpacks how common assumptions about older Australians and housing can obscure the growing realities of mortgage debt carried into retirement, rising insecurity in private rental, and limited options in regional communities.

Drawing on insights from her Churchill Fellowship travels, Victoria highlights practical alternatives beyond the detached home. Her message is clear: we need tenure-agnostic housing policy that treats housing as essential infrastructure and designs for social connection.

Read the full post and discover what a more diverse, age-inclusive housing system could look like.

Free GNC Short Course for Registered Nurses in Aged Care

The Gerontological Nursing Competencies (GNC) courses equip registered nurses in aged care with skills to assist older people in living well, through two sequential six-month courses. By the end of the course, participating nurses develop a comprehensive portfolio demonstrating their capabilities as gerontological nursing specialists.

Eligible registered nurses can access this course for FREE (valued at $2,500) - thanks to funding from the Australian Government’s Department of Health, Disability and Ageing (eligibility criteria apply).

Participating nurses will receive recognition of prior learning equivalent to one postgraduate subject for each course completed in the two‑course GNC program. This can be applied to gerontological postgraduate courses such as the Graduate Certificate in Gerontology or Master of Nursing (Clinical Leadership).
