In 2020, Unyime Jasper received a grant under the RM Gibson Program, to co-create and evaluate a video intervention aimed at supporting hospitalised older people to reduce their sedentary behaviour.

Jasper’s research question was, ‘What is the impact of a co-created video among hospitalised older people and their carers on knowledge of and intention to reduce sedentary behaviour?’ To answer this, he sought to co-create and evaluate a video intervention to increase knowledge among hospitalised older people to reduce sedentary behaviour.

Older people, their carers and multi-disciplinary staff co-developed the video, including reviewing the video script and storyboard and the final video. Due to COVID, the video could not be recorded in the hospital setting. However, thanks to the University of Adelaide, filming took place in teaching simulation labs. The result is a high-quality video that is now available online.

Already approved for use by Royal Adelaide Hospital’s surgery department, two other hospitals in Adelaide are considering its use for routine patient information.

Jasper is now in the process of evaluating the effectiveness of the video on hospital inpatients’ knowledge about sedentary behaviour.
