2026 05 08 - AAG WA Presents: Dementia Risk Reduction and Prevention: A global Perspective
_
This webinar, chaired by Barbara Blundell, featured Professor Bloss Stephan presenting on dementia risk reduction and prevention from a global perspective. Professor Bloss Stephan discussed the epidemiology of dementia, highlighting that while high-income countries show declining dementia risk trends, Australia has seen increasing risk factors. She presented data showing that modifiable risk factors account for approximately 25% of dementia cases in Australia, with significant variations across different population groups including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. The presentation covered both individualized risk prediction models and population-level prevention strategies, noting that while 100+ dementia risk prediction models exist, many lack validation in low- and middle-income countries. Professor Stephan shared findings from the Dementia Risk Reduction and Prevention Project in Western Australia, which involved co-designing a Healthy Brain Aging Resource Pack with 45 stakeholders. The webinar concluded with a Q&A session where participants discussed topics including vaccine impacts, hearing loss interventions, public knowledge levels, and the challenge of communicating about multiple risk factors without overwhelming audiences.
