AAG Research Trust grant announcement

AAG and the AAG Research Trust are pleased to announce the two recipients of this year's Hal Kendig Research Development Program grant:

  • Dr Abby Haynes, University of Sydney
Delivering exercise in aged care services to improve quality of life: Co-designing the TOP-UP program app

  • Dr Steph Garratt, Monash University
More than a clinical activity: Supporting aged care residents' choice, dignity, and engagement with medication administration

Follow this link for more information on their projects.

We congratulate all applicants, whose submissions demonstrated the depth and range of work in the field of gerontology. We also thank members of the Grants Committee and the Hal Kendig Research Development Program Committee.

In 2023, the AAG Research Trust awarded 11 grants across four programs. By funding important work that often falls outside the criteria of other large government grant programs, the Research Trust promotes AAG's fundamental commitment to improving the experience of ageing by connecting research, policy and practice.

Climate change and ageing

24 October is International Day of Climate Action, a timely reminder of the significant effects of climate change on the experience of ageing. Here is a snapshot of the work being done in this important space:

  • AAG recently conducted a rapid evidence assessment on heatwaves and older people in Australia. This piece of work is the final part of the 'Ageing Planet: Climate Change in an Ageing World' collaboration between the International Longevity Centre (ILC) United Kingdom and AAG (as executive office for ILC Australia). A key objective of the project is to ensure that global policy on climate change recognises the importance of ageing.

  • The August AAG 500 blog considered AAG's response to the National Health and Climate Strategy.

  • In the second AAG 500 blog for October, members of the Ethos research team at Griffith University discuss the effect of increased heat on older Australians. Their key message is the urgent need to promote awareness of the dangers of extreme heat amongst older people, particularly those with chronic health conditions.
