NAIDOC Week & thank you to volunteers from ATSIAAG

July 7 - 14 is NAIDOC Week 2024 and this year's theme 'Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud' is a reminder of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples' passion and pride in culture across Australia. This year's poster artwork (pictured above) Urapun Muy is by artist and Samuawgadhalgal woman Deb Belyea who pays homage to Torres Strait Islanders and Aboriginal people everywhere, "as we all have that one fire: our passion for our culture". More about the artist and the 2024 NAIDOC Week poster artwork here.

Importantly we want to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Ageing Advisory Group (ATSIAAG) who generously share their time and knowledge with AAG. Special thanks to Gwenda Darling, Linda Deravin, Roslyn Malay, Eliza Pross and Kylie Sullivan who have been working directly with the AAG CEO and National Office this year to improve AAG's action in this area. We couldn't do it without them and are grateful for their guidance.

Introducing #AAGConf24 Welcome plenary speaker
Rev James "Jim" Colville AM

As we gear up for the 57th AAG Conference in Hobart, we're thrilled to introduce another stellar speaker: Rev James "Jim" Colville AM, the inspirational founder of the Tasmanian nonprofit, Colony 47.

Rev Colville established Colony 47 in 1973, driven by a mission to support those in need, particularly in the realm of housing. Since its inception, the organisation has made a significant impact: aiding over 50,000 households with bond or rental assistance, supporting 7,000 young people through early intervention programs, and helping 17,500 young individuals with education and employment opportunities.

Hobart was a vastly different place back then, with no gay rights, limited access to contraception, and widespread rejection of those who were different.

Renting an old church at 47 Davey Street, Rev Colville opened a coffee shop where everyone was welcome and assistance was provided without judgment.

This haven supported young people, older individuals, Indigenous Australians, the lonely, the hungry, and the unemployed. Rev Colville believed in the potential of those facing rejection, recognising that with the right support, acceptance, and respect, they could thrive.

Half a century later, Colony 47 continues to champion Tasmanians in need, focusing on housing.

Rev Colville’s dedication was recently honoured with the 2024 Tasmania Senior Australian of the Year award.
