AAG releases two new discussion papers: ‘New Aged Care Act & Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Care Organisations’ and ‘Legislation to action: Delivering inclusive care for all’

‘New Aged Care Act & Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Care Organisations’

In May 2025, AAG reached out to members and the AAG Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Ageing Advisory Group (ATSIAAG) and held an online drop-in session to gauge their sense of readiness and steps being taken to prepare for the incoming new Aged Care Act 2024 (at the time scheduled to take effect from 1 July 2025).

Since the postponement of the new Aged Care Act until 1 November 2025, AAG ATSIAAG members have voiced support for the delayed implementation. Further follow-up with our members has been incorporated into this paper, along with additional details in response to preliminary feedback from the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing on the draft paper.

‘Legislation to action: Delivering inclusive care for all’

Initiatives and frameworks for inclusion in care systems and services aim to promote equitable access for people in marginalised, disadvantaged, and underserved communities. However, these frameworks do not always work as intended to ensure inclusion. Some of the reasons for this include structural and systemic challenges that limit the scope of inclusive practice.

This paper explores several challenges to achieving greater inclusion in Australian aged care, including systemic barriers stemming from a market-based model that limits equitableaccess and the difficulty for individuals to navigate the complex system. It also includes references to several AAG member research articles on this important topic.

AAG thanks all members who provided feedback and supported the development of the above papers. Discover these and more AAG reports and publications on our website.

Presentation Accessibility: AAG Good Practice Guidelines

Looking for a way to make your presentations more inclusive?
Are you unsure how to format presentation slides to support accessibility?

The AAG Good Practice Guidelines: Creating Accessible Presentations is a helpful resource designed for our members to use when creating and delivering electronic presentations, either in person or online.

It covers various aspects of presentation preparation and execution with an emphasis on considering accessibility at every step. With practical advice and tips, these guidelines aim to support participants to actively engage at AAG events and contribute to discussions, in particular, attendees who may be blind, vision impaired, or neurodivergent.
