Get on board the Picture Yourself Project – Workshops available now!

Picture Yourself is a groundbreaking initiative that aims to transform how older Australians are visually represented in media by getting older people behind the camera to create a free, publicly accessible image library that authentically represents older Australians from all walks of life.

Led by AAG member and convenor of AAG’s Creativity, Art, and Design in Ageing Special Interest Group (CADSIG), Dr. Tricia King, and funded by Creative Australia and in partnership with the AAG and Comlink Australia, this project is now offering free workshops across Australia to train older people in photography so they can contribute to the image library.

Do you have a group of older people you work with or know who would be interested in participating in the project? If so, contact Tricia at [email protected] to find out more and book a workshop.

AAG Member Research Spotlight: Underdiagnosis of dementia in residents of residential aged care services: A scoping review

This month’s AAG Member Research Spotlight features an important scoping review led by AAG member and co-convenor of AAG’s Assistive Technology Special Interest Group (TECHSIG), Dr Reena Tewari, and co-authors Dr Agathe Daria Jadczak (2018 AAG SA Robert Penhall Early Career Research Awardee), Prof Renuka Visvanathan (2019 AAG Fellow), and DrRonaldo D. Piovezan.

From the article:

In the general population, it is estimated that globally three-quarters of people living with dementia are not diagnosed. Across the world, more than 50% of RACS residents are estimated to be living with undiagnosed dementia, a situation likely to be reflected in Australian RACS. The degree of underdiagnosis found by researchers worldwide varies between studies and is influenced by the methods initially used to identify dementia as well as the research study design. Studies have found that the diagnosis of dementia can differ from the use of simple screening scales to definitive approaches, such as expert diagnosis by clinicians using accepted diagnosis criteria.

The practice impacts of this review include the potential to inform the development of care models and interventions to address dementia underdiagnosis in RACS.
