Jo Antoniades inducted to the Victorian Multicultural Honour Roll

#AAG extends hearty congratulations to member A/Prof Jo Antoniades who was recently inducted to Victoria’s prestigious Multicultural Honour Roll for her work promoting dementia awareness and health equity for culturally and linguistically diverse older persons. The recognition coincided with kicking off the ‘CultureCare’ project in Sydney, including seven interviews in two days, before flying to India to launch ten new films in the Moving Pictures India series. Congratulations, Jo, on this wonderful achievement!

Our members continue to kick goals as we round out 2024. We look forward to more innovation, awards and recognition among members in 2025!

New SIG in 2025: Challenging Ageism

On Ageism Awareness Day 2024, #AAG hosted a highly successful and thought-provoking webinar ‘End Ageism in Advertising’, moderated by Robert Tickner AO, Chair of EveryAge Counts.

Following this successful panel discussion, AAG members expressed interest in further opportunities to address this important and pervasive issue. In response, A/Prof Rachel Ambagtsheer and Dr Bethany Wilton-Harding are pleased to invite members to join AAG’s new Special Interest Group – Challenging Ageism.

The Challenging Ageism SIG will promote and facilitate discussion and collaboration among AAG members interested in raising awareness and challenging ageism; provide advice and expertise to inform AAG’s policy and advocacy work relating to ageism and inclusion; highlight issues of intersectionality across various forms of discrimination and prejudice; and promote cross-disciplinary knowledge sharing and collaboration to advance anti-ageism research, policy, and practice initiatives.

To join, check the box Challenging Ageism SIG in the Special Interest Groups tab in your membership profile. You can also join other SIGs relating to your interests.

PHD Opportunity to address loneliness

A new PhD scholarship is available to address loneliness among older people receiving aged care at home. This project aims to address this significant gap in knowledge about loneliness among in-home aged care recipients, with an overall aim to find innovative solutions to improve social isolation and loneliness of older Australians that can be implemented widely across the aged care system. This PhD is co-funded and supervised by Federation University and Silverchain, featuring a generous scholarship and a highly supportive supervisory team (AAG members Prof. Tanya Davison and Dr Marissa Dickins). For more information visit the Federation University website.

What should deprescribing look like?

Current treatment guidelines often lack guidance on when and how to stop medications that are no longer necessary or when the harms outweigh potential benefits. Monash University is seeking medical doctors, pharmacists, nurses and related students who have completed clinical placement to participate in an anonymous international online survey to share your perspectives on the language, content and format of deprescribing recommendations and guidelines. For more information about the research, contact AAG Victorian Division Secretary, Ms Shin Liau, at [email protected]
