Strategic Innovation Awardee (2022) Showcase – Let’s Yarn!

Recently we shared with you a new podcast series 'Let’s Yarn! Ageing well in the Torres Strait developed and released by Mrs Betty Sagigi and the Healthy Ageing Research Team (HART) at James Cook University, as part of the 2022 Strategic Innovation Program funded project “Spreading the word: Research translation on ageing well for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Far North Queensland”.

This research project is now complete, and we are pleased to showcase the positive outcomes and impact of this important program on Aboriginal and Torres Strait communities in Far North Queensland and in the Torres Strait.

The #AAGResearchTrust extends its congratulations to Betty Sagigi and Chenoa Wapau, podcast series hosts (pictured), and the entire HART team on this fantastic achievement supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders caring for family members and community Elders with dementia.

Launch of the National Dementia Action Plan 2024-2034

Last week, the Hon Anika Wells MP, Minister for Aged Care, launched the National Dementia Action Plan, Australia’s’ national dementia policy framework. The Action Plan provides the opportunity to make genuine and enduring positive changes over the next 10 years to improve the quality of life for people in Australia living with dementia, including 8 high-level actions aimed at increasing dementia awareness, reducing the population’s risk of dementia, and driving better coordinated services for people living with dementia, their families and carers.

#AAG was pleased to provide feedback during the consultation process, helping to shape and inform the development of the Action Plan, and will be considering how best to contribute to supporting the actions within the Plan moving forward.

You can find out more and access a copy of the Action Plan on the Department’s website.

AAG members clean up at the 22nd ERA National Conference

Emerging Researchers in Ageing (#ERA) held its 22nd online national conference, ERA 2024, on 4th December 2024, providing a unique opportunity for emerging researchers in ageing to share their research. AAG is pleased to confirm all ERA 2024 prize winners are all #AAG members!

  • Best ERA 2024 Oral Presentation - Lachlan Green, Australian Catholic University
  • Best ERA 2024 Oral Presentation by a Member of the AAG - Angelique Zamora (pictured below online with AAG Board member, Anita Goh), The University of Queensland
  • Helen Bartlett Prize for Innovation in Ageing Research - Jessamine Chen, Macquarie University

AAG congratulates the above winners on this fantastic achievement to round out 2024! A copy of the ERA 2024 Conference Proceedings is available here.

We also offer our sincere appreciation to ERA for being AAG’s Early Career partner. ERA has supported activities like the AAG annual conference, working closely with the AAG SECG on webinars and conference workshops. ERA has also provided a vital forum for the Researchers in Ageing student group, addressing the challenges faced by higher-degree research students in the multidisciplinary field of ageing research, such as working in isolation and lacking opportunities to connect with senior researchers. ERA’s efforts have fostered networks and encouraged collaborative endeavours.

A special thank you to Dr. Matthew Carroll for his positive collaboration!
