The 2021 AAG conference - digital wins national award

We’re proud to announce that AAG’s 54th Conference - digital won the award for Best Virtual Event Portal at this week’s EventsAir RISE 2022 User Conference.

Like so many other events, COVID forced us to move to a virtual event platform for the 2020 and 2021 Conferences. The sudden and reactive shift to online conferencing brought many challenges, including a strong sense of ‘online saturation’.

Together with our professional conference organisers, The Conference Manager, we knew we had to raise the level of interest and engagement with the online event. We devoted a significant amount of time and effort into creating an innovating platform that was visually attractive, professional and engaging, and offered true interactivity. In addition to using every element of the virtual platform to create an immersive online experience, we also adapted the technology for the art and photography online exhibition. This real point of difference was noted in the award.

Please join us in congratulating AAG’s Head of Membership and Marketing, Michael Tan, and Jacqui Bates of The Conference Manager for this incredible achievement. Ironically, Michael couldn’t attend last Monday's award event in Surfers Paradise, as he was putting the finishing touches on the live 2022 AAG Conference, running in Adelaide next week, but Jacqui was there to accept the award AAG’s behalf.

There is still time to register for the 55th AAG Conference in Adelaide.

Conference Workshop - Elder abuse and home

Hosted by AAG’s Housing and the Built Environment Special Interest Group and Elder Abuse Special Interest Group

1.30 to 3.30 pm, Tuesday 22 November 2022

Adelaide Convention Centre

Focusing on specific topics, AAG’s pre-conference workshops are a popular part of the program. One of this year’s workshops is on the critical topic of ‘Elder abuse and home’.

Due in part to the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, elder abuse in residential aged care has received much (warranted) attention. However, elder abuse also occurs in the community, particularly in private homes. In this context, it can be perpetrated by people and organisations that provide services in the person’s home, or by friends and family. Sometimes, the home itself is used as a tool in abuse.

In this workshop, led by two of AAG’s special interest groups, participants will explore different aspects of elder abuse and the home, from societal inequities resulting in later-life housing insecurity to abuse by adult children. As a forum for engaging with other professionals and those with lived experience of home-based abuse and discrimination, this workshop offers the opportunity to learn from experts about the latest research evidence, and explore what can be done by services and individuals to prevent home-based elder abuse.

We look forward to welcoming those who have registered for this workshop, and working together to strengthen our individual and community efforts to reduce elder abuse in the home.

Welcome Amber Mills and Misha Sharma

We are pleased to introduce two new members to the AAG team. Dr Amber Mills has joined (this week!) AAG as Policy and Research Manager. Amber has held research and project management roles in acute health, community nursing and more recently in community service settings. Since completing her PhD in Developmental Psychology at the University of Sydney, she has developed research and policy expertise in health, aged care and disability services. She has been an active member of AAG’s Victorian Division Committee and was Chair of the Industry Partnership sub-committee. In joining the national office team, Amber looks forward to working with AAG members on promoting evidence-based policy and practice reforms to meet AAG’s key aim of improving the experience of ageing by connecting research, policy and practice.

Misha Sharma has been appointed to the new role of Executive Assistant to the CEO and Executive Officer of AAG Research Trust. Mish has an established background in business administration and support, with experience in property development, construction, supply chain and public relations. With a Bachelor in Business Information Systems, Mish brings hands-on experience in creating and successfully implementing systems, processes and IT functions to enable day-to-day business operations. Originally from Geelong, Mish joins AAG from Brisbane. She is currently working two days a week (Tuesdays and Wednesdays), going full-time from January 2023.

IAGG 2023 Asia Oceania Regional Conference (Yokohama, Japan) –
Abstract submission closes 30 November

Every four years, the Asia Oceania Region of the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics runs a regional conference, and the next one will be held in Yokohama Japan, June 12-15 2023. The IAGG regional conference provides a wonderful opportunity to showcase your research on the international stage, and for building international networks.

The regional conference also has a student and emerging researcher program embedded in the program, so there are excellent opportunities for PhD students and early career researchers from across the region to also build networks.

AAG always has a strong participation at the IAGG regional conferences, so you will also meet many of your AAG friends and colleagues there.

Abstract submissions are now open, and close on November 30 2022.

For further information about the conference, abstract submission, and registration, please see https://www.iagg2023.org/index.html
