Part 1: Hear from Shannon Jarrott, building on her AAG Conference presentations. Shannon will speak on best intergenerational practices. This presentation will emphasise specific practices that intergenerational activity leaders can use to increase positive experiences for young and older participants. A brief review of theory and research informing these practices will be included. Workshop attendees will learn about a complimentary evaluation resource.

Part 2: Interactive panel discussion with Professor Sunil Bhar, Jaya Manchikanti, and Marc Williams sharing their experience with local intergenerational projects and responding to Shannon’s talk.

Professor Shannon Jarrott
Ohio State University

Shannon Jarrott, Ph.D. is a professor of social work at The Ohio State University. She specializes in community-based services, emphasizing shared programming for youth and older persons. Her research of implementation and outcomes of evidence-based intergenerational practice with diverse participants reflects a community-based participatory approach. Shannon is Behavioural and Social Sciences chair for the Gerontological Society of America and Editor of The Journal of Intergenerational Relationships. more

Sunhil Bar
Professor of Psychology
Swinburne University of Technology

Sunil Bhar is a Professor of Psychology at Swinburne University of Technology and is the director of the Wellbeing Clinic for Older Adults, a geropsychology counselling service for older adults living in residential aged care facilities. For more than a decade, he has led research on the outcomes and mechanisms of psychological treatments for older adults. His research program adopts a comprehensive approach to the development and delivery of effective and sustainable interventions to promote wellbeing in later life.

I am a proud Yorta Yorta and Gunai man born in Shepparton Victoria. My family come from Cummergunja (Mission) on the border of NSW and Victoria. I am the planned activities group/social support coordinator at MMIGP. I work closely with our Elders at MMIGP. I have been a part of MMIGP for close to 15 years in various roles from Health Coordinator and Local Justice Worker to being on the Board of Directors.

Jaya has been involved in aged care programs and projects in Melbourne for more than twenty years. She supported the Commissioner for Senior Victorians during 2017 – 19 and later worked at Our Watch as a Senior Program Adviser for the prevention of elder abuse. Jaya was recently involved in leading a project involving a school and an aged care facility in the City of Monash and is currently undertaking a PhD investigating the intersection between community development and sustainable development.
