Policy, research, and industry news
Opportunities to contribute
- The Queensland Accessible Transport Advisory Council (QATAC) will provide independent and strategic advice to the Minister for Transport and Main Roads, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) and Queensland Rail (QR). This advice will involve strategic policy and technical accessibility advice on significant products, services, information and infrastructure projects across the Queensland Government transport portfolio, to deliver an integrated transport network accessible to everyone. They're looking for subject matter experts who are also representatives of marginalised community groups and/or people with lived experience. - The recent Parliamentary inquiry by the Communities, Disability Services and Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Committee determined that the majority of the Queensland community, including health practitioners, is supportive of the introduction of voluntary assisted dying legislation in Queensland. The Queensland Law Reform Commission has been asked by the Government to develop an appropriate legislative scheme for voluntary assisted dying in Queensland. The Commission has released a Consultation Paper (WP No 79) outlining key issues and inviting written submissions in response to a series of questions detailed in the paper. You can make a submission following the guidelines in the Consultation Paper.

- Queensland has passed new residential park regulations to protect residents from rent increases during COVID.
- QCOSS released their 2020 Living Affordability in Queensland report.
- New versions of the Enduring Power of Attorney (EPOA) and Advance Health Directive (AHD) forms have been approved for use from 30 November this year. The new forms and accompanying explanatory guides are available here. The current versions of the forms will remain online until 30 November 2020.
- Justice and Attorney-General has approved new Queensland Capacity Assessment Guidelines 2020. The capacity guidelines provide general information about capacity, capacity assessment and the legal tests of capacity in Queensland. Additional information about the guidelines is available online.
- To celebrate National Carers Week (11-17 October), Palliative Care Queensland launched a new downloadable e-book aimed at supporting carers looking after loved ones approaching their end of life - Palliative Caring; Information for families and carers who are caring for an older person with a life-limiting illness in Queensland
- Carers Queensland's Your Caring Way is a new program for carers wanting to pursue their own goals, like training, education, volunteering, or employment. Its services and training are free of charge, though some higher-level qualifications may require a small contribution fee. The program aims to inspire positive change by connecting people to real opportunities. Find out more
Research and teaching news
- The University of Queensland is the first university in the Southern Hemisphere to join the global Age Friendly University Network, recognised by the WHO as part of its "Age Friendly World" initiative. https://extranet.who.int/agefriendlyworld/afp/age-friendly-university-global-network/.
- A QUT PhD candidate is seeking participants for a research project (QUT Ethics Approval Number 2000000814) exploring what is needed to create a happy, healthy, flourishing (or eudaemonic) home.
