Policy, research, and industry news

Reminder of opportunities to contribute

  • The Queensland Government are seeking feedback on an Options Paper, which contains proposals to modernise Queensland’s state energy laws. Feedback on the proposals in the Options Paper will inform the next stage of the review. This consultation closes 31 January 2020, 11.59pm. 
  • Queensland Government are looking at options to enable residential customers who are supplied electricity through embedded networks to access the free, energy-specific complaint and dispute resolution service provided by the Energy and Water Ombudsman Queensland (EWOQ). They have released a discussion paper Dispute resolution for residential embedded network customers—Regulatory impact statement (PDF) and are inviting written submissions by 31 January 2020 (see document for details). Email [email protected] for more information. 
  • Earlier this year the Queensland Government released the model code for neighbourhood design to encourage the development of healthier and more active communities across the state. The Queensland Government is progressing mandatory provisions for neighbourhood design. You can read a short overview document which explains the mandatory provisions being progressed. You can provide feedback on how the mandatory provisions will be implemented before 31 January 2020. For more click here.
     

Industry and policy news

  • The Queensland Human Rights Act came into force on January 1st. Commencement of the Act means public entities have a specific obligation to act and make decisions compatible with human rights. The Human Rights Act protects 23 specific human rights. The newly established Queensland Human Rights Commission, which replaces the Anti-Discrimination Commission, will administer the new Human Rights Act. For more information about the Human Rights Act 2019 and the Queensland Human Rights Commission visit www.qhrc.qld.gov.au
  • Minister for Communities and Minister for Disability Services and Seniors Coralee O’Rourke launched the Disability Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction Framework and Toolkit.  For more information and to download Framework and Toolkit, visit: www.collaborating4inclusion.org

Research news

  • The UQ-Exeter Institute (QUEX) Institute has been operating for over 2 years. At the QUEX Symposium in July 2019 it was agreed that the relationship will extend for a further 4 years. The QUEX themes have been updated; from 2020 the new themes will be:
  • Healthy Living – which represents a merge of two of the existing themes ‘Healthy Ageing and Physical Activity and Nutrition’
  • Global Environment Futures – building on the current theme of ‘Environmental Sustainability
  • Digital Worlds and Disruptive Technologies – a new theme to support continued growth of the QUEX Institute
  • QUT has announced the establishment of nine University Research Centres, including a Centre for Health Outcomes, Systems and Services led by Distinguished Professor Patsy Yates and Professor Steven McPhail. Read more.
  • Professor Deborah Terry AO has been announced as The University of Queensland's next Vice-Chancellor and President, from 1 August 2020. Debbie started her career at UQ in the School of Psychology in 1990, and when she left more than two decades later, was Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor. She has spent six years as Vice-Chancellor of Curtin.

  • Prof Ruth Hubbard, University of Queensland - The GOAL Trial: Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment for Frail Older People with Chronic Kidney Disease to Increase Attainment of Patient-Identified Goals: A Cluster Randomised Controlled Trial
  • Fintan Thompson, James Cook University-Long term risk and protective factors for dementia and cognitive impairment among Indigenous Australians in the Torres Strait and Cape York
  • Professor Robin Drogemuller, Queensland University of Technology-An Inter-generational Learning and Living Campus: A New Model for Healthy Senior Living and Integrated School Communities across Urban and Regional Australia
  • Dr Li-Ann Leow from UQ’s School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences has received funding from the Brain Foundation for her research into age-related decline.

Events and announcements

Events and Training

  • Longevity by Design is a charrette, or design challenge, that will be held in Brisbane over one day on 6 February 2020. The charrette will bring together thought leaders and professionals across a broad range of industries involved in designing for later life, building on the foundations of The University of Queensland’s Healthy Ageing Initiative. Registered teams will take on a design challenge set in the Redlands.
  • The LASA State Conferences 2020 will focus on Ageing Well - from policy to practice. The Queensland State Conference will be held 1-2 April 2020 on the Gold Coast. Find more information and register here.
