Opportunities to contribute

  • Consultation has opened on the design concepts for the new Cross River Rail station at the Ekka. Consultation closes on 7 February. Information on consultation is available at: crossriverrail.qld.gov.au/exhibition, by email [email protected] or by phone 1800 010 875.

Industry and policy news

  • The board of QCOSS is pleased to announce the appointment of Aimee McVeigh as QCOSS’ new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective 17 February 2020. Aimee replaces outgoing CEO Mark Henley. A distinguished community lawyer and leading human rights advocate, Aimee is devoted to empowering people who are marginalised and vulnerable. 
  • Businesses, community groups and organisations working to advance reconciliation in Queensland are encouraged to nominate for 2020 Queensland Reconciliation Awards. The Awards program offers a total prize pool of $25,000 across five categories—business, community, education, partnership and an overall Premier’s Reconciliation Award. Nominations close at 5pm, Monday 24 February 2020. For more information or to submit an online nomination, visit www.qld.gov.au/reconciliation
  • Work is progressing on the End of Life Care Quality Indicators Project, which commenced in August 2019. A list of Quality Statements for end of life care has been compiled from which quality indicators will be developed. This list will be available for circulation following a face-to-face workshop on 9 March 2020 when the Advisory Group will finalise the quality statements, consider next steps for collecting measures of quality and how indicators will be used to drive quality improvement. For more information, please email Wendy Pearse at [email protected].
  • The West Moreton Region Care at the End of Life Collaborative—in collaboration with General Practitioners, the Queensland Ambulance Service, BlueCare and other community services—have developed three information packs for palliative patients who are being cared for at home. The packs are currently being trialed by several organisations across Queensland. They will be reviewed early in 2020. For more information, please email [email protected].
  • The Office of the Public Guardian have produced a series of web pages, an introductory video and some print materials about planning ahead. www.publicguardian.qld.gov.au/planahead. The A5 booklet is also on the webpages in A4 printable form.
  • A factsheet has been developed to support doctors in understanding their role in relation to the Statement of Choices document. You can access this resource here.

Job vacancies

  • Do you want to see better outcomes for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness? Then join the Q Shelter team and be part of an exciting new service integration initiative! The initiative will unfold in nine locations across Queensland and Q Shelter is currently recruiting five Regional Coordinators and a Team Facilitator to drive this initiative. These positions will be embedded across Brisbane, Mackay, Cairns and Logan. Other positions will be located and auspiced regionally and all regional coordinators will work as a collaborative team.   • Council on the Ageing (COTA) Queensland is currently seeking a Consumer Engagement Project Officer to progress their CHSP rural and regional engagement strategy. The Project Officer will be responsible for the implementation of engagement activities that enable an increased understanding of current experiences for people and services accessing and delivering aged care Home Support in rural and regional areas. Research news

  • Griffith University is proud to announce that Professor Cindy Shannon will join the University as its first Pro Vice Chancellor (Indigenous). In the new executive leadership role, Professor Shannon will work alongside colleagues in successfully enabling all aspects of Griffith’s First Nations engagement as well as developing strategies to enhance participation, support and success of its First Nations communities.
  • The University of Queensland has begun its journey towards formally joining the Age Friendly University global network. Since launching its 10 Age Friendly Principles, 50 universities in North America, Europe and Southeast Asia have formally joined the network. UQ’s journey towards joining the network is being led by Professor Nancy Pachana. Progress will be summarized on the Age Friendly University update page of the UQ Ageing Mind Initiative: https://ami.group.uq.edu.au/about/uq-age-friendly-university-initiative.  
  • For those in the transport space, Dr Vincent Moug is joining the Queensland College of Art’s industrial design team and has an interest in designing accessible public transport systems.

Funding

  • Community organisations are being encouraged to apply for funding in the latest round of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF) grants program. There are five GCBF funding rounds each year, with grants from $500 to $35,000 on offer. To review the guidelines and apply, visit www.justice.qld.gov.au/grants
  • This year, Queensland Seniors Week will become Queensland Seniors Month – lasting the whole month of August. Funded by the Queensland Government and coordinated by COTA Queensland, the program provides $100,000 to subsidise events and activities held during Seniors Month. Organisations and groups can apply for up to $1000 for an event. Seniors Month subsidy applications will open Monday 3 February at 9am and close Sunday 15 March at 11:59pm. Events and Training

  • Carers Queensland are hosting a FREE “Carer, Mental Health and Wellbeing Expo” on Tuesday 25 February 10.00am – 2.00pm at Kedron Wavell Services Club. The event is an opportunity to discuss changes to services, talk about the changing environment, and look at newly funded supports.   • Round two of Changing Lives, Changing Communities Brisbane is coming up in March. You are invited to come along to work with your neighbours and colleagues to make your community the best it can be. Take your place to drive change in your community.   • Health Consumers Queensland Annual Forum 2020: Partnering with meaning will be held 26–27 May 2020 on the Sunshine Coast. http://www.hcq.org.au/
  • Dementia Australia is hosting a masterclass with Professor Dawn Brooker. Dawn developed the VIP’s care framework used internationally to assist organisations assess the extent to which their practice is person-centred. The Brisbane masterclass is on Thursday 26 March 2020. These practical masterclasses are specifically run for managers and healthcare professionals responsible for the implementation of the new Aged Care Quality Standards.
  • The LASA State Conferences 2020 will focus on Ageing Well - from policy to practice. The Queensland State Conference will be held 1-2 April 2020 on the Gold Coast. Find more information and register here.
