We are pleased to share the following updates:

  1. Upcoming events in the ACT:
    • The Silver is Gold Festival is back this year and will be held at EPIC on the 26th of May:
      • Come along and be sure to stop by the AAG ACT Committee table for a chat.
    • “Never too old to play outside” will be hosted by COTA on the 4th of June:
      • Play Outside Day will be held at Haig Park and will include exercises, live performances and a range of activities.

    • Parkinson’s ACT are hosting an event titled “Respite Care - Looking at respite care from different perspectives”:
      • The event will be hosted by LDK Greenway Views on the 8th of July.

    • The Canberra Health Annual Research Meeting (CHARM) is just around the corner:
      • The conference will be held between the 26th and 29th of July.
      • Abstract submission closes on Monday the 16th of May!
      • The AAG ACT committee will again be awarding prizes for the best 3 Minute Thesis and Best Poster related to ageing.
    • The ACT Committee will be hosting the 2022 AAG Glenda Powell Travelling Fellow Associate Professor Peter Bragge in the middle of the year:
  2. Other upcoming events:
    • The ARC Centre of Excellence in Population Ageing Research (CEPAR) is holding an event at UNSW in Sydney entitled: “Diversity and Ageing Symposium: Population and Individual Ageing Perspectives”:
      • The event will be held on the 8th of September. More information can be found here.
    • The Centre for Research in Aged Care at Edith Cowan University, in partnership with the Australian Hartford Consortium of Gerontological Nursing Excellence are hosting a six-day virtual “Australiasian Conference on Care of Older People”:
      • The conference will be held between the 23rd and 28th of October.

    • The 55th AAG Conference will return to face-to-face in 2022:
      • The conference will be held in Adelaide between the 22nd and 25th of November.
      • This year’s theme is “The Future of Ageing Well”. Start planning ahead of time!
      • Conference bursaries will be available again this year – details to be announced soon.
  3. The Australian Government Productivity Commission have two new projects underway:
    • Carer’s leave: This inquiry will examine the economic and social impacts of allowing informal carers to take extended unpaid leave from their work to care for older people who are frail and living at home.
    • Aged Care Employment: This study will examine employment models in aged care and the effects that policies and procedures to preference the direct employment of aged care workers would have on the sector.
  4. Help wanted!
    • The ANU are looking for a part-time Research Assistant part-time at the Population Health department of the Australian National University Medical School. The position would suit a candidate with prior research experience through postgraduate university education or some work experience. Some experience of working in projects or survey design and preliminary data analysis using general quantitative techniques would be an advantage.

    • The UC are seeking EOI’s for a PhD scholarship on “New models of dementia care and support” which is supported by Community Home Australia. The successful applicant will commence their PhD program in 2023 and be supported by a $30,000/year for three years stipend. Reply to this email for more information.
