Joost van Hoof (Netherlands)

Joost van Hoof DSc PhD (1980) works as a full professor of Urban Ageing with the Faculty of Social Work & Education of The Hague University of Applied Sciences. He is also affiliated with the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Poland.

Key to Van Hoof’s work are age-friendly cities, sustainability and ageing, and inclusive and participatory design for older people.  In his capacity as the chairperson of the Knowledge Platform Age-Friendly The Hague, he leads several studies on the longitudinal effects and outcomes of municipal age-friendly action programs. 

One of the results of his actions is the launch of the Age-Friendly Cities and Communities Questionnaire (AFCCQ), which has been recognised as a best practice by the European Commission, the World Health Organization and the United Nations Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021-2030). The AFCCQ is being validated for use in over 20 countries, including through a local study in Adelaide.
